Donovan departs Wiscasset preservation commission
The Wiscasset Historic Preservation Commission voted Sept. 20, no certificate of appropriateness was needed for a tool shed on skids at 55 Federal St. The panel voted to give David Pope his application fee back.
Member Pam Logan said Pope’s project is temporary so it does not fall under the preservation ordinance.
Commissioner Wendy Donovan has left the panel for personal reasons, according to Chair John Reinhardt. “Therefore we are looking for a new member,” he said.
Reinhardt and Albert Gordon Kontrath attended a workshop they said was mostly about issues historic preservation organizations face. Kontrath said the goal is to make every commission member an ambassador for historic preservation, through "elevator speeches,” networking and more. Reinhardt said Wiscasset's commission is facing similar problems to organizations around the state, especially in getting out-of-state realtors to identify if a property is in a historic district. Reinhardt and Leslie Roberts will attend a workshop on grant funding.
The commission discussed possible changes to the ordinance on the warrant in June, especially issues with the district's boundaries. Consultant Susan Blagden said she would get a tax map and show all the properties in the possible districts, including the original national historic register, the three overlay districts, and buildings on the national register that are in none of the districts. Members did not feel they had expressed themselves clearly to the selectmen who reviewed the Ordinance Review Committee’s recommendations.
The commission will work on a website and on a card to send to realtors and to historic disrict residents.
