Dresden canoe landing proposed on Eastern River
The Dresden Board of Selectmen heard plans Monday night on a design for a landing for canoes and kayaks on the Eastern River. The plans may be ready soon but not in time for a town meeting decision June 13.
Resident Joe Wiley, co-trustee for the late Inge Foster’s designated funds willed to the town for that purpose, told the board about the intentions for the project on Town Landing Road.
The site on the road, located off Route 197 near the Eastern River bridge, has been for many years the location of the town’s boat landing now in disrepair and virtually unusable at this point in time.
Currently, the site has a steep grade going down to the river making it unlikely place for launching regular boats but a viable possibility for vessels like canoes and kayaks.
Wiley has approached the town on previous occasions about the proper use of the late benefactor’s wishes. This time he spoke about work on engineering design plans for the project beginning, which Wiley expects to see completed in time for a 2016 town meeting vote.
Plowing contract
Selectmen also discussed the need to put a new three-year snow plowing contract up for bid, since the current two-year contract with Goodall Landscaping of Topsham will end May 15.
Goodall took over the last two years of a contract that began with another contractor for one year. During the winter a year ago, the town had problems with 23 mailboxes damaged throughout the town during snowstorms. The board took up the matter as a subject of concern that year.
So far this year the town has reported no shortage of supplies, namely salt and sand, for the 36 miles of roads in the rural community.
Reduced lot sale
Selectmen have decided to reduce the price of an 18-acre wooded vacant lot at the end of Dodge Road, which is tax-acquired property, from the original asking price of $17,500 to $14,900. The property located on the public way, which is a road the town does not maintain, has a brook running through it.
The town has it listed with Cromwell Properties in Wiscasset.
Other business
During the meeting, the board approved two local citizens, former Selectman David Probert and Peter Walsh, to fill the vacancies on the budget review committee.
The board will meet for a budget review workshop next Monday at 5 p.m. at the Town Office.
