Dresden cleans up illegal dumpsite

Dresden town officials, the Maine Warden’s Service and the Dresden Sno-Valley Riders snowmobile club were on hand early Sunday, Sept. 18 to clean up an illegal dumpsite off Gilmore Brook Road.
The cleanup was part of Landowner’s Appreciation Day, an annual event the Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Department sponsors in an effort to dissuade private landowners from posting their properties.
“It is just a way for the public to hunt on private land,” said Selectman Allan Moeller, who organized the removal of tires, shingles, household goods and insulation along a dirt road off a paved town road.
In August, Warden Doug Kulis summonsed Miles Hebert of Livermore Falls for illegal dumping. Hebert is scheduled to appear in Lincoln County District Court on Nov. 10. Kulis said he acted on clues found in the debris, tracking them though another person to Hebert, who allegedly admitted to the dumping.
Kulis said Hebert had come to the site on Saturday, Sept. 17 and with a companion cleaned up his pile of trash and placed it in a dumpster.
“They picked up his stuff and more,“ Kulis said.
Kulis said Hebert’s effort would probably of help when Hebert appears in court. The fine for illegal dumping is $500.
Kulis said as many as 30 dumpsites statewide were scheduled to be cleaned up on the weekend.
Organizations such as the snowmobile club were competing for prizes donated by the Kittery Trading Post. First prize is a $1,000 gift card.
Moeller thanked K&G Auto in Richmond for loaning an excavator and trailer for the event.
