Due to pandemic, Alna gives contractors more time to bid on plowing

“We realize that contractors have been thrown for a loop, like we all have, with the pandemic,” Alna Second Selectman Doug Baston said via Zoom Friday afternoon, as the board unanimously pushed snowplowing bids’ due date from April 26 to June 3.

“Sounds good to me,” Third Selectman Greg Shute said.

“We’re just giving people more time to figure out their business options,” Baston said.

No bids had come in yet, but they tend to come in last minute, First Selectman Melissa Spinney explained in response to questions after the vote. “We’ve had a bunch of people ask about it and get the bid package, so I think we’re getting at least three.”

Hagar Enterprises has plowed the town’s roads for years. Co-owner Seth Hagar has said he planned to bid, Spinney said. Baston explained, the board called Friday’s meeting so contractors would know they had more time.

The board meets next at 6 p.m. May 6.
