Early Leighton photos to be featured on Westport Island
The work of early 20th century Lincoln County photographer E. Joseph Leighton is the subject of a presentation scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. at the Westport old town hall.
Earle G. Shettleworth Jr., state historian, will speak about Leighton’s photographs which reveal everyday life in Lincoln County in the early decades of the 20th century. Leighton (1884-1957) traveled around the area bringing his photographic equipment and documenting county life by capturing glimpses of sawmills, apple orchards, dairy farms, school graduations and other daily occurrences.
His work includes photographs of life on Westport Island in the early 20th century which will be discussed in the presentation. Shettleworth’s talk is presented by the Westport Island History Committee. Admission is free.
A Maine native, Shettleworth has received honorary doctorates from Bowdoin College and the Maine College of Art. His interest in Maine’s history dates to his teens and he has served the Maine Historic Preservation Commission through his extensive career as a board member, architectural historian and director.
Shettleworth is a noted author and lecturer on Maine history and architecture. He is co-author of “Maine Photography: A History, 1840-2015,” published last year. He was appointed state historian in 2004.
Westport Island’s 14-member history committee has been active in collecting and preserving the island’s heritage. The volunteers work with the Maine Memory Network and the collection includes textiles, schoolbooks and town records dating back to the 19th century.
