Edgecomb tax rate up 8.6%
Edgecomb selectmen announced an 8.6 percent increase for the 2019-20 tax rate at their meeting on Monday, July 29, bringing the rate to $18.57 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, from the previous $17.09.
Chair Jack Sarmanian cited school and fire department expenses that drove up costs as well as “across the board increases.”
Selectman Ted Hugger said the warrant articles voters approved will serve the town well but he is concerned about the increase in taxes. Hugger mentioned the number of residents on fixed incomes and he said the town needs a committee to take a hard look at addressing “where we want to go.”
Also at the meeting, Edgecomb Fire Department was recognized with a SHAPE award from the Maine Department of Labor. Director of Workplace Safety Steven Greeley and Program Manager Michael LaPlante presented the plaque to Fire Chief Roy Potter.
The Safety and Health Award for Public Employees (SHAPE) started in 2005 to recognize safe and healthful public sector workplaces. It is given after a review of workplace reports as well as an inspection of the facility.
According to LaPlante, the Edgecomb Fire Department ranks with only one or two other departments in the state that had no issues needing correction on the first inspection.
Selectman Mike Smith congratulated Potter, saying, “You always live up to everything we ask of you. We couldn’t be happier and we think you’re the best. Thank you for everything you’ve done for the town.”
Potter thanked the board for its comments and gave credit to the volunteer members. “It’s the group in the department,” he said.
Selectmen also expressed sympathy and extended their condolences to the family of Dr. Judith Sandick.
Barbara Brennan was introduced as the recording secretary for the board.
Jonathan Turcotte asked for approval of an application to serve beer and wine at Glidden Point Oysters. Selectmen approved the request which will now need state approval.
The board meets next at 6 p.m. Aug. 12 at the town office.
