Edgecomb TIF change hearing, town vote set for Jan. 14
Edgecomb voters will decide on a change to the town’s TIF, or tax increment financing, at a public hearing Monday, Jan. 14 at the town office at 6 p.m. A special town meeting will immediately follow for residents to vote on the amendment which will fund a new fire truck.
Buying the $247,600 truck was approved at a special town meeting last summer. Since then, selectmen have discussed the best way to pay for the truck, consulting with attorney Jon Pottle of Eaton Peabody about amending the TIF for it, and reviewing drafts of proposed language.
The amendment would be the second one to the Davis Island TIF the town created in 2005. A 2011 amendment financed the fire station.
Selectmen reviewed the final draft from Pottle Jan. 2 and approved the revisions, setting the date for the hearing and special town meeting. Attorney Chip Griffin will moderate the town meeting. The regular selectmen’s meeting will follow.
In other business Jan. 2, Selectman Mike Smith said he learned attendance at Gardens Aglow for the 2018 season was approximately 114,000. Fellow Selectman Ted Hugger said the event was responsible for creating some more local employment and a “trickle down” effect for local businesses.
Fire Chief Roy Potter informed the board the fire department is getting requests from residents to inspect wood stoves in their homes. Potter said some insurance companies are directing their customers to call.
Potter explained, the fire department can’t legally inspect wood stoves and to do so it would need to have solid fuel licenses. He wanted the board to know he is calling the insurance companies after receiving requests and explaining the situation to them. So far, he said, there have been no problems with this. Potter also informed the board the department got 199 calls for service in 2018.
Selectmen picked dates for their 2019 board meetings which continue every other Monday at 6 p.m.
Saturday, May 18 was discussed as the date for the annual town meeting.
