Fire truck for sale
Motorists on Edgecomb’s Route 27 began passing an unusual sight at the town’s new fire station the week of August 20. In the part of the freshly paved parking lot that is nearest the road, a fire engine has been parked with a “For Sale” sign in the windshield.
Fire Chief Roy Potter is trying to avoid hiring a company that helps sell fire trucks in exchange for a cut of the sale. Other than plans to put the truck on Craigslist, the roadside display is the only means of advertising Potter expects to use.
The 1984 truck has been replaced by a newer, donated one with fewer miles on it. The department’s auxiliary funded about $6,000 in work on the replacement truck, a 1990 model.
“I can’t justify keeping three engines,” Potter said.
He hopes to get at least $15,000 for the outgoing 1984 truck. The first $6,000 from the sale will go back to the auxiliary, and anything else will go into the department’s fire truck fund for purchases and repairs.
The truck for sale is not the one that recently sustained about $12,000 in damage when rocks entered it via a hydrant. That truck came back from repairs on August 24, Potter said.
