First Congo’s Advent plans

    Hanging of the Greens, a tradition rooted in ancient civilizations to celebrate the winter solstice, will take place in Wiscasset at First Congregational Church on the first Sunday in Advent, Dec. 3. Greens in the shape of a star, heart, cross and circle will be presented during the 10 a.m. service, accompanied by the reading of Bible passages that highlight the meaning of the special greenery. The title of Rev. David Myers’ sermon is “Are you Hoping?

    Dec. 10, Rev. Myers’ sermon “A Visit from God” advises parishioners to prepare for the unexpected.  

    The choir, under the direction of organist and choir director Joel Pierce, will perform a Christmas cantata on Sunday, Dec. 17, featuring Glad Noelby Mark Wilson, and In the Bleak Midwinter and Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence by Gustav Hoist.

    Dec. 24, Rev. Myers’ sermon at the 10 a.m. service is How Can This Be?” based on the angel’s visit to Mary.

    The Christmas Eve candlelight service will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature the short story, “I Remember Bethlehem by Earl Ken Brown (a story told to Luke, the Gospel writer, by Jesse the Innkeeper) and will highlight traditional Christmas music.

    The Dec. 31 morning service will relate the story of Christmas as told through scripture and favorite Christmas carols.
