The First lends Wiscasset withdrawal money
Wiscasset selectmen have chosen The First in Wiscasset for a $2 million credit line, to cover costs to withdraw from Regional School Unit 12, Town Manager Laurie Smith said.
The board made the decision January 14, Smith said. Last November, voters gave selectmen the OK to borrow the money; they rejected a citizens group’s proposal to tap the town’s reserve fund.
Officials have said the costs include payments the town agreed to make to the school district, as well as teachers’ summer salaries. However, selectmen have also discussed the withdrawal money as a possible source of up to $250,000 in start-up funds for the new school department. The department opens July 1, and is likely months away from having a budget to take to voters.
Start-up costs could include paying an interim superintendent and a secretary, school committee members have said. Plans are under way to set up a meeting of selectmen, the school, budget, and withdrawal committees and consultants involved with the withdrawal deal, selectmen said.
