Former restaurant space up for auction
The building that formerly housed the Under Currach Tavern at 93 Townsend Avenue in Boothbay Harbor is going up for auction on Wednesday, March 13 at 10 a.m. The auction will be held at the property, according to Keenan Auction Company, which is hosting the event.
Next to the sign is a small white notice that appeared approximately one week earlier, stating that “All persons are hereby notified to immediately quit the premises and are prohibited from entering from this date until further notice.”
This notice from the town of Boothbay Harbor declares that the premises are “not fit for habitation,” and that at the time the notice was posted the premises were still occupied by tenants in the upstairs apartments. These tenants had to vacate, due to the utilities being turned off and fire and life safety violations.
The notice was signed by Geoff Smith, the Town of Boothbay Harbor Code Enforcement Officer. Attempts to reach Smith for comment were unsuccessful.
As of January 24, the premises appeared to be vacant. Several holes in the inside wall could be seen near one rear door. Whether these were old or newly created is unknown.
The auction of the building states that it is “mixed-use commercial” and will not include any of the restaurant equipment still inside. This equipment will be auctioned separately.
Four restaurants have been housed in the building in the last several years: Under Currach Tavern, the Pot Buoy Pub, 93 Townsend Steak and Seafood, and The Daily Catch. One, 93 Townsend Steak and Seafood House, was named Yankee Magazine's Editor's Choice in 2007.
