Former superintendent Dorr a candidate for temp slot
Wiscasset's former superintendent of schools Wayne Dorr is in the running for interim superintendent of the town's new school department.
Dorr is among three candidates with closed-door interviews scheduled with the Wiscasset School Committee on January 23 and January 25, according to committee members.
The committee’s vice chairman Steve Smith said the three were on a list of six the Maine School Management Association provided as potential candidates. Of those, four were interested, Smith said.
He said one of the four was unavailable for all of March. That brought down to three the number the committee planned to take to the interview stage.
“Wayne Dorr could ... jump in being that he's familiar with the school system,” Smith said. Dorr was superintendent in Wiscasset from 1998 to 2000 and later worked for Regional School Unit 1, Smith said. Dorr served as assistant superintendent there until about a year and a half ago, said RSU 1’s administrative assistant for special education, Vicki Warner. The district, which includes Woolwich and Bath, directly neighbors Regional School Unit 12, the district Wiscasset is leaving.
Smith had proposed only scheduling an interview with Dorr, but committee member Eugene Stover asked that the committee meet with each of the three candidates.
“(Dorr is) a great guy, probably he's the guy we want,” Stover said.
Smith did not name the other two candidates. Attempts to reach Dorr for comment were not immediately successful.
As for the search for a permanent superintendent, Smith said three representatives of the Maine School Management Association will meet with the committee for a workshop on the search process January 30. The association offers a number of services, including consulting that would come with a fee, Smith said.
Wiscasset voted in November 2013 to leave RSU 12. The town's first day on its own is July 1. Among other tasks, the interim superintendent will help the committee prepare the first year's proposed budget to take to voters.
