Frosty response at meeting
In a meeting that bordered on feisty, Hagar Enterprises let the town of Damariscotta know that it wasn't interested in having its option years picked up.
During the Monday, Feb. 10 Damariscotta Board of Selectmen meeting, Seth Hagar said he and his company would prefer if the town declined the last two option years and instead went out to bid again for its downtown snow removal.
“If you don't like the price, we're perfectly agreeable to putting it out to bid again,” Hagar said. “I would like to see you get (the same offered price).”
The contention arose after an amendment to the current contract, which runs throughout this year, would have required additional services for real estate that wasn't in the original contract.
Selectmen’s Chairman Joshua Pinkham said the additional space, which would require upwards of $5,000 per year to plow, would change the scope of the contract and the project should go back out to bid.
The added money would push the contract north of its current $75,000 range and into $80,000 per season category, which is grounds for new bids, Pinkham contended.
Hagar said the current contract is actually saving the town money, and that when the new bids come in, the town can expect to see a price increase.
“This is just crazy,” he said. “We would like to take our bid back and we'll go from there. We're going to fulfill our (current) contract.”
Town Manager Matt Lutkus said the response from the town has been largely positive in regards to Hagar's operation.
From there, the contract language will be cleaned up before the project is again put out to bid.
An amendment to go out to bid on Monday was voted down, 3-2, with the sentiment being more time was needed to clean up the language and to run the current situation across the desk of the town attorney.
