Gingerbread house workshop creates artwork, smiles

On Dec. 7 at Wiscasset Community Center, many people got into the holiday spirit by decorating gingerbread houses.

Parks and Recreation Director Lisa Thompson began planning for the workshop back in October. This is an event she also used to host in South Portland. When Wiscasset Holiday Marketfest came to her, she decided the workshop would be a great event to incorporate into the Wiscasset community, and it showed great success. The event, which was planned to have 20 houses set up for decoration, was sold out. The gingerbread houses were assembled and ready for people to put their creativity to work upon arrival.

The stations had many things to decorate the houses with, including Skittles, frosting, M&M’s, mini-snowmen, gumdrops, mini-marshmallows, and much more. There was no shortage of smiles and laughter as both kids and adults enjoyed creating the houses together. One table had an assortment of gingerbread and sugar cookies, water and hot chocolate for all to enjoy while getting to work.

When seeking out ways to become involved in the community, exchange student Muhammad Khalique of Wiscasset Middle High School asked Thompson if there was anything he could help with. She happily agreed to let him be a part of the event, helping attendees and checking people in at the door.

Don’t miss out on the next holiday community event! You can find more smiles and good times at the community center once again while enjoying a pancake breakfast with Santa, Saturday, Dec. 15. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
