Gingerbread Spectacular ... how sweet it was

Mon, 12/20/2021 - 3:30pm

Gingerbread Spectacular fans fell in love with the inventive 27 gingerbreads of 2021, 12 of which received awards. Hundreds of fans came to the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor from Dec. 16 to Dec. 19.

From traditional houses to gazebos; from an annual event,  the Charlie Begin Lobster Boat Races, to a local landmark, Boothbay Railway Village, we were taken to magical places – the land of magic and misfit trees, (the Most Spectacular) Santa's Workshop, to elfin life in the forest and dwellings of trees and mushrooms. Sights included a chess board, a vaccinated Geico gecko and a skateboard ramp.

Veterans were honored with the Wreaths Across America entry. All of the gingerbreads honored the time-honored craft and passion that is gingerbread building.

Fans were also charmed by the Opera House’s old-time holiday glamour. Technical Director Kevin Kiley’s creativity knows no bounds. Nor does his sensibility for creating atmosphere. Speaking of ambiance, Kiley also sat down at the piano Sunday afternoon to play a few Christmas songs. And the Opera House’s Gingerbread Boy greeted people in the house, posed for photos solo and with some kids, and sometimes even danced a jig.

Another Gingerbread Spectacular has come and gone, but the memories will live on.
