Governor’s Newcastle meeting canceled
Gov. Paul LePage was expected at a town hall meeting in Newcastle on Thursday, April 14, but postponed the visit, owing to “unforeseen circumstances,’’ a sign at the venue stated.
The meeting was to have taken place at Lincoln Academy in the evening. No official word was available as to the exact reason the event was cancelled.
Ken Maguire, acting chairman of the Republican County Committee, said that he believed it was due to something going on in the Legislature. “As far as I can tell, these things are planned only a week or two in advance,” he said. “It will probably be rescheduled.”
Maguire, who is technically secretary of the Lincoln County Party, was recently bumped up to acting chairman when the chairman, vice chairman, and Republican State Committee Man resigned suddenly this week.
Representative Michael Devin, D-Newcastle, was also of the opinion that events in Augusta caused the governor to cancel the visit. “I was hoping to discuss an idea I had for economic development with him here,” Devin said. “But the Legislative session is still ongoing, and he probably felt he needed to be on hand.”
