A great start to summer

Wed, 07/06/2022 - 9:00am

Can you believe it? A Windjammer Days Festival so beautiful that no events were rained out! What a glorious week it was for the 60th with sunshine, tolerable humidity, events galore and throngs of people to enjoy it all. Congratulations to the Windjammer Days Committee, and their volunteers, for a great schedule of events.

Back when the organizers changed the festival to starting in June instead of July, there was some grumbling about it starting too early, but the idea was to jump start the summer tourist season. The plan has worked and, despite COVID-19 still lingering and higher gas prices, the region is busy with traffic and lots of people staying in their summer homes, renting hotels, spending money at restaurants and shops and taking in what the region has to offer.

Summer is short but there are still weeks ahead to enjoy not only the weather but the many things that make this region a place to be in July, August and September.

Seeing the region from the water is one of the most popular summer activities. Book a ride on one of the region’s excursion boats – you’ll be glad you did, especially if you get a beautiful Maine day with sunshine and blue skies. There are concerts, shows, tours, special events and plenty of restaurants to enjoy. Check our websites for the calendar of events or read about it in our weekly newspaper if you are looking for something to do.

Sly & The Family Stone sung it well, “Them summer days, Those summer days,” in their 1969 hit song, “Hot Fun in the Summertime.”

Make your summer of ’22 memorable!
