Help celebrate Westport Community Association's 60th anniversary
Get out the candles and let’s have a party! The Westport Community Association is celebrating 60 years on Westport Island.
It began in 1955 with seven islanders, who were concerned about the condition of the Methodist Church on the island, and to promote other good causes. A year later the group took title to the church and has cared for it ever since.
So this year we are celebrating our 60th anniversary with some wonderful food, a program showcasing performing artists and musicians at the historic church, and a display at the Old Town Hall next to the church, of the many crafts our talented islanders produce.
We are looking for people who would like to perform at the church on Aug. 16. What is your special talent? Would you like to sing, play an instrument, or maybe do a humorous performance? We know we have many talented individuals on this island, so here is a chance to showcase what you can do either solo or in a group. If this is for you, please email Carol Blake, describing your special talent, at cjblake6@gmail.com.
We also have a place for you who are artists and artisans. We would love to see the best examples of the work of Westport Islanders exhibited at the anniversary celebration on Aug. 16 at the Old Town Hall. Paintings, quilts, sculpture, carvings, pottery, jewelry and items made of fiber or fabric, etc. will be highlighted in the limited space available.
Although not a sale, you would be free to leave business cards with your work. We will consider any form of art or craft, but please contact Susan Bowditch if you have questions. Otherwise, please send 2-3 photos of your finest work for consideration, either by email at susanbowditch@hotmail.com or by regular mail at 32 Castle Lane, Westport Island, ME 04578.
To help us plan efficiently, performers should contact Carol Blake and artists/artisans should contact Susan Bowditch no later than June 16.
This is going to be a fun celebration with good food and good company and an opportunity for all of us to become acquainted with the many talents of our full or part time folks. Save the date of Aug. 16 and watch for more information in the newspapers and on the signboard at the head of the island.
