Help ‘Help Yourself Shelf’ with bag buys

For December, the store leadership at Hannaford’s in Damariscotta has selected the Help Yourself Shelf (HYS) to receive a $1 donation from every purchase of the $2.50 Fight Hunger Bag and 25 cents from the sale of their new Snack Pal Plates Program.

The Fight Hunger Bag Program facilitates community support with the goal to make a difference in the vicinities where shoppers live and work. Almost $1 million has been donated to over 1,400 hunger organizations since the program launched in April 2014.

“We are honored to again be selected by the people at Damariscotta Hannaford to receive the Fight Hunger monies. It will help us purchase much needed supplies to offer to food insecure individuals who seek us out,“ said Gretchen Burleigh-Johnson, HYS coordinator.

Help Yourself Shelf first came into being over 40 years ago as a bookshelf at the back of the sanctuary at St. Philip’s Church on Hodge Street. It has grown through the years as the need has grown.

As a Good Shepherd Food Bank partner, Help Yourself Shelf purchases supplies in quantities that allow it to provide for its participants. Monies generated through the Snack Pal Plates and the Bags program go directly to aid in provisioning the Pantry.
