Helping ourselves and the community
At the last trustees’ meeting, the trustees directed the publicity committee, Chairman Doc Schilke, Larry Clark, Arlene Polewarczyk and Ellie Tracy, to keep an all-inclusive newsletter and newspaper column going. The publicity committee asked the trustees and members to contribute to the newsletter and the column. Carl Hewitt conveyed this message to the membership in his announcements at the Wednesday dinner.
Contributions can be almost anything ranging from articles, letters, ideas, or comments on past or future events. We would like comments on cribbage, Crafty Friends, the meal program and Walking-in-the-gym. We reserve the right to edit for length and language but promise to get back to every contributor before publication.
At the last publicity committee meeting we got side tracked by talking about a couple of people who needed a helping hand. Lately there has been a lot of advertising done to raise funds and recruit volunteers for charities like food banks, fuel assistance and the like. We all get numb to the fact that there are people in need. However, when a face is put on a need, the reality of the situation clears. There are rich and poor and all in between who can run into difficulties and need help.
Many, including those mentioned above, would not ask for help but would rather suffer through the situation on their own. But isn’t this what charity and helping hands are for, to help a person get through one difficulty so they can have renewed strength to meet the other trials and tribulations they face? Sometimes a helping hand has to be extended first.
Through all the years I’ve been involved with the Wiscasset Senior Center, I’ve always hoped that we could do more to help ourselves and help the community. We have done much but we can do even more. The publicity committee will try to shine a light on what particular members have done, what the Senior Center is doing, what help and services are available and what volunteer opportunities exist for members. We can be proud of what we’ve accomplished and we can do much more if everyone helps.
Many of you have heard the rumor that Nancy and I will be moving to St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor. It is true. We may be leaving Wiscasset but we are not leaving the Wiscasset Senior Center. We will continue to be members and actively involved. I intend to continue writing this column and represent the Wiscasset Senior Center.
