Several significant musical events involving the Wiscasset Primary and Middle Schools will take place over the next several weeks.

On December 1, the middle school choruses will join with the Wiscasset High School chorus and band to lead the music for the annual Wiscasset Town Christmas-Tree Lighting Ceremony. This is always a fun and festive way for our students to help usher in the holiday season in Wiscasset. The ceremony begins at 4:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church on High Street.

On December 7, all second, third and fourth graders will take a field trip to the Merrill Auditorium in Portland to see the “The Victorian Nutcracker” performed by the Portland Ballet. Students have been studying the ballet, music and composer (Tchaikovsky) in music classes prior to this event. This trip is made possible because of the support of the Wiscasset Partners In Education.

On December 13, as a culmination to the study of the ballet, “The Nutcracker,” students will put on the mini-musical, “The Nutcracker Suite.” The production is a collaborative project between the Art, Music and Physical Education programs at Wiscasset Primary School. Students will perform each of the significant pieces from the ballet with acting, dancing and singing. All primary school students in grades K-4 created the set for the musical. The performance begins at 6 p.m. in the Wiscasset Primary School gym.

On December 18, the middle school will perform the annual holiday concert. The concert will feature the Fifth Grade Chorus, Middle School Chorus and the Middle School Band. Choral selections include an upbeat piece with familiar holiday carols called “Happy Holidays” and “The Nutcracker in Three Minutes.” The band will dazzle the audience with “The Tempest.” The concert will conclude with the tradition of combining the band and choruses for “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.” The performance begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Wiscasset Middle School gym.
