We are not quite at the halfway mark of summer, according to the calendar, but despite the heat wave over the Fourth of July weekend, the weather has been nice, especially the past week. We do need rain, however, as drought conditions continue and fire hazards increase.

The Drone Show has to be one of the best events of the summer in the region so far. Thank you to Mark Gimbel and all involved in making it happen. My wife and I were lucky enough to be out on the water for the show – thanks to our neighbor and lobsterman Corey Pottle and his wife, Brandy – and it was surreal. I am sure a lot of people are hoping for a return engagement.

So, according to my count on the calendar (hope my math skills are right!), there are 55 days left until the first day of fall as of this writing. Fall is usually nice, weather wise, but there are things in the summer that aren’t enjoyed as much during the third season of the year. The ocean temperature is around 60F right now and going swimming in the salt water is a summer activity, especially during a heat wave.

Summer is also a time when friends or family trek to Maine for vacations. Two family visits are on the horizon (tomorrow and mid-August) and, from the looks of the traffic and activity around town, visitors and vacationers are enjoying the region’s offerings. We’re not known as Vacationland for nothing.

With July about to end, we hope August and September bring us more great weather. Check our calendars for upcoming events you might be interested in attending. One of those events might be Boothbay Harbor Fire Department’s second annual lobster bake on Sherman Field on Saturday, Aug. 1. Proceeds will help the department purchase equipment.
