Alna Third Selectman Coreysha Lothrop shared how Alna has funded a way to keep beavers from clogging culverts. 

"The first grant we received was for $4,000 through the McKeen Center at Bowdoin College, and that was called the Common Good Grant. The second grant we received was the ASK (ask for specific know-how) grant through Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission that was for $5,000.

"Our grant funding was a total of $9,000. We also have assigned $5,000 in the roads budget for non-lethal beaver management. So we will be spending a total of about $14,000. We have two more installations we would like to have completed and those I will continue to write grants for. We are committed to installing those and if grant funding is not acquired we have budgeted for those over the next two years. The sooner we install them the sooner they start saving money."

Lothrop noted, "Part of the inspiration for this program in Alna was the impressive installation of the specific beaver baffle system installed on the Back Meadow Road in Damariscotta. That was a wonderful collaboration between Skip Lisle, the Beaver Deceiver specialist, both nationally and internationally recognized, and Coastal Rivers."
