The torch is on the move for Special Olympics, and Wiscasset police and Two Bridges Regional Jail personnel carried it from Edgecomb to Woolwich on June 7.

The runners picked up the torch from other law enforcement at Midcoast Federal Credit Union in Edgecomb, where drinks and treats, courtesy of Sarah’s in Wiscasset, were served. The runners followed the Wiscasset police cruiser driven by Diane Hammond across the bridge and through town, where they were greeted by waves and toots of car horns.

Some of the officers rode in the van part of the way, while others ran all the way to Montsweag Roadhouse, where the torch was passed to Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office personnel.

Special Olympics provides an annual opportunity for students and adults with special needs to participate in athletics including modified track and field activities, skiing, equestrian events, sailing, bowling and bocce, soccer, tennis, swimming, skating, golf, flag football and softball.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run not only is a visible show of support, it is also a fundraiser. Last year, the torch run raised $400,000 for Special Olympics Maine, according to a press release from the organization.
