UPDATE: Names released in officer’s fatal shooting of Jefferson man in ‘armed confrontation’

    UPDATE: Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office released the following additional information Friday afternoon:

    The deceased suspect involved in the armed confrontation with deputies early this morning in Jefferson is identified as 41-year-old Jacob E. McClure of Jefferson.

    Deputy David Bellows fatally wounded McClure during the confrontation. Bellows was accompanied at the residence by Sgt. Matthew Day and Deputy Jerold Winslow.

    No further information will be available until the completion of the investigation.

    Original post: Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said a man was shot and killed Friday morning, Dec. 18 in an armed confrontation with deputies in Jefferson.

    At about 12:25 a.m., Lincoln County Communications Center received a 911 call from a residence on Rockland Road in Jefferson. Deputies entered the residence after witnessing an ongoing assault between a man and a woman, which led to the armed confrontation between the man and the deputies inside the residence just after 1 a.m. No deputies were injured.

    As with any officer-involved shooting, the Maine Attorney General’s Office, assisted by the Maine State Police, is investigating the incident and sent a team of investigators to Jefferson.

    The name of the man killed and the deputies involved are being withheld pending appropriate family notifications.

    No further information is being released at this time pending the investigation.
