Lenten events planned at First Congregational
On the first Sunday of Lent, March 9 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, the Reverend John Potter will begin a series of sermons on the Beatitudes, the declarations of blessedness pronounced by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. The sermons will be based on an interpretation of the beatitudes described in the book, “The Wisdom Jesus” by Cynthia Bourgeault.
“From Jesus to Christ, the First Christians,” a Frontline series, will be shown in Fellowship Hall on March 19 and 26 and April 2. An open class to discuss the series will be held on April 9. All meetings begin at noon.
The annual spring breakfast sponsored by Christian Education will be held in Fellowship Hall at 8:30 a.m. on Palm Sunday, April 13.
During Holy Week, a Tenebrae service will be celebrated on Maundy Thursday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. The candlelight service includes readings from the gospels describing the time between the Last Supper and the Passion of Christ.
There will be two services on Easter, the sunrise service at 5:45 a.m. and the festival service with special music by the choir at 11 a.m.
The First Congregational Church of Wiscasset is located above the common on High Street. The public is invited to all special Lenten events.
