Library lovers converge at fundraiser
Sitting with wife Sukey Haney and their friend and neighbor Leonard Meiselman at Marianmade Farm near sunset Sunday, Wiscasset Public Library volunteer Stan Haney saw the good turnout for the “Band for Books” fundraiser as pretty clear evidence: “The demise of the libraries is not on the horizon, despite the arrival of the digital age,” he said.
The three Wiscasset residents were among more than 150 attendees who mingled and ate in and outside the barn to the music of Downeast Brass. The event raised money through ticket sales and raffle tickets for chances on donated items.
Frank Barnako raised his arms and cheered after wife Donna, beaming, informed him they had won metal sculptor Bryan Buck’s stainless steel angel weather vane.
Earlier, another local artist, watercolor and oil painter Virginia Forrest, explained why she donated her services of a painting of a winning ticket-holder’s home. “Because I believe very much in the library,” she said. Forrest is a member of Friends of the Library, the volunteer group that arranged the fundraiser, held for the third year at the venue on Sherman Lane and next to the Sheepscot River.
Preliminary figures show this year’s installment raised more than $5,000, Friends Vice President Linda Winterberg wrote in an email Monday. The money will be used to replace old fluorescent light fixtures in the library’s non-fiction and children’s rooms, and hopefully the used book shop, with new LED fixtures, Winterberg wrote.
“These will not only perform better, but will save the library in cost of operation,” Winterberg noted.
During the event, library director Pam Dunning praised the Friends group for its help year-round, including putting on a guest speaker series and donating to children’s programming. “The Friends do so much for the library, it’s incredible,” Dunning said. “They’re amazing.”
Several couples interviewed said they had come to “Band for Books” before and enjoyed it, so they were attending again for that reason and to help the library. Some, like the Haneys, are retired from librarian jobs at other libraries. “So this is true to our hearts,” Stan Haney said.
Thyle Shartar, a past elementary school librarian, was there with husband Marty Fox. It’s a great event, Shartar said. Asked what she likes about the Wiscasset library, she said, “It’s so friendly.”
