Lincoln County citizens honored for ‘Spirit of America’

Lincoln County citizens picked by their towns were feted at Lincoln County Communications Center Nov. 7 at the annual Spirit of America event that honors volunteerism.

Not every town submitted a name this year; here are the honorees:

In Alna, volunteer members of Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway Museum, for restoring rolling stock and track, and operating the museum: in Bremen, the Planning Board tasked with ensuring shoreland zoning permits meet the town’s ordinance; in Damariscotta, Robert “Hass” Tobey for serving on the Planning Advisory Committee, formed as part of the Heart and Soul project.

In Dresden, Nancy “Rusty” Cole, who works tirelessly to promote the health and welfare of the people of Dresden and Richmond; in Edgecomb, Janet Blevins, who played an important role in developing Edgecomb’s new website; in Jefferson, the Lincoln County Quilters, who have presented more than 175 quilts to veterans since 2010; in Newcastle, Allen Ray, who has been a longtime ballot clerk and has served on organizations including Great Salt Bay Sanitary District, Newcastle Veterans Park Committee, where he has been voluntarily mowing the park since its inception.

In Nobleboro, Kriss Hunold, who has volunteered on organizations including the school board, PTO, Central School backpack program, and community energy fund; in Somerville, Geraldine Kimball for her numerous contributions and countless hours donated to the town; in South Bristol, Gunnar Gundersen for his years serving the fire department, as Emergency Management Director, and Boy Scout Leader; in Waldoboro, the memory of Carol Ann Blodgett, for her work in Waldoboro Schools, Lions Club, several offices and committees, and as a poll worker, and supporting William Blodgett in his political career. Commissioner Blodgett and his family accepted the award.

In Westport Island, Gaye Wagner and Roger Higgins for many years’ service including town clerk; deputy director and director of emergency management, road committee member, and president of the Volunteer Fire Department.

In Whitefield, Lynn Taladko, who served as an EMT for over 30 years, on the Union Hall Committee,  on the Board of Appeals, and designed the town fire station; and in Wiscasset, the Family Wishes Committee, which reaches out to families who need help at Christmastime. The members sometimes call themselves the “gray haired elves.” The organizing committee includes Bonnie Blagdon, Jenn Spaur, Terry Heller, Terri Wells, Nancy Roby, Sandra Shea, Carman Tetu, Katharine Martin Savage, Judy Flanagan and Sue Varney.

After the presentations, honorees and their families and friends were treated to cake, pastries, cider and coffee.
