Dear Editor:

The voice of “We the People” in Maine’s presidential election is hanging by a thread as the Democratically controlled Legislature moved the “National Popular Vote” bill to the Governor’s desk. If Governor Mills does not veto this bill, then presidential elections become meaningless in Maine. Big states like California, New York, and a handful of others will pick our president.

Democrats are celebrating their consolidation of power because it almost guarantees there will never be another Republican president. Their thought, I presume, is that guarantee is worth surrendering the voice of the Maine voter. 

Our country’s move to the left almost 16 years ago has not served the U.S. well. By almost every measure our country is in decline. An April 1 Rasmussen poll indicated, “63 % of voters believe the nation is heading down the wrong track.” A recent Pew Research headline is, “Public trust in government near new historic low.” In 1964 trust was at 77%. Under Obama it declined from 25% to 18%.  During Trump's presidency trust went up from a dismal 18% to 21%. Under Biden it erased those gains and presently is at 16%. 

Now is not the time to lock any party into a permanent position of power, especially one “heading down the wrong track.”
