Martha E. Simmons, 88, of Phippsburg died Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

She was born in Bath on December 11, 1924, a daughter of Roger D. and Florence Marion (Austin) Foss.

She attended Mt. Desert Island schools and on September 25, 1942 married Lewis E. Simmons Sr. She was employed at Stinson's Cannery in Bath and Health Tex for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lewis E. Simmons Sr. on June 3, 1988; one son, Gerald W. “Jerry” Simmons in August 1967; and one granddaughter, Lisa M. Willey, in 1969.

She is survived by one son, Lewis E. “Eddie” Simmons Jr. of Phippsburg; two daughters, Marion Whitcomb of Woolwich and Marie Plummer and her husband David of Boothbay Harbor; two grandchildren, Arthur E. Williams and his wife Katrina of Phippsburg and Lester E. Williams Jr. and his girlfriend Cathy of Bath; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27 at Harding Cemetery in Brunswick. A gathering of family and friends will follow at her residence in Phippsburg.
