MDOT talks traffic improvements with Woolwich
State traffic engineers are eyeing turn lanes and other improvements to Route 1 intersections at George Wright and Nequasset roads. Selectmen Allison Heller and Jason Shaw recently met with MDOT officials to discuss ways to make the intersections safer for motorists.
“They came to town and were able to see firsthand the traffic problems,” said Shaw at Monday night’s select board meeting. The Nequasset Road intersection was identified as a high risk area, added Shaw. The intersection has been the scene of a number of accidents and currently has a blinking caution light. Turning lanes may be added there.
Hepler said traffic engineers looked at the stretch of highway from Nequasset Road to the bridge by the Taste of Maine Restaurant. Widening and turn lanes were also discussed for the George Wright Road intersection.
Also Monday, Fire Chief Mike Demers said the recent heavy windstorm brought down many trees, keeping firefighters very busy and disrupting power for a number of residents. Demers said the department’s recent open house was a huge success.
EMS Director Brian Carlton said the ambulance department made 17 calls in October, resulting in 11 transports. The department has made 84 calls since the start of the fiscal year and is on track to reach or exceed the number projected for the year. Carlton said the department has approximately $35,000 in uncollected fees for ambulance services. Overdue bills are turned over to the town’s collection agency for processing, he added.
“Everything I’ve heard so far is that your people are doing a great job,” commented Board Chair David King Sr.
Town Administrator Kim Dalton said attempts were being made to fix technical problems the town office has had with its email service over the past week.
