Moose Mountain Jazz returns for free concert at St. Andrews Village
The Moose Mountain Jazz Band will return to St. Andrews Village for an encore performance following a very well received concert last year. The music will begin Sunday, July 22, at 2 p.m. on the lawn.
The seven-piece Dixieland jazz band features the instruments that are traditional for this foot-tapping style of music: trumpet, trombone, clarinet, piano, banjo, drums and tuba. Dixieland jazz was born in New Orleans and popularized in the early 20th century by greats like Louis Armstrong. Dixieland jazz has many influences, including gospel and blues music.
The band members are great musicians and have a way of developing a rapport with the audience, telling jokes between numbers and accepting requests.
Lance Maclean, the band leader and banjo player, said Dixieland jazz is a celebration of music. “We like to have fun with the music,” Maclean said. “We want people to leave the show feeling uplifted.”
And while the band will play traditional jazz numbers, they always include a few swing tunes in their lineup. But whether it is traditional Dixieland or swing, the band’s entire repertoire is very danceable.
“It is happy feet music,” Maclean said. “It gets everybody out of their seats.”
