Narcan training in Newcastle Feb. 5 empowers residents to save lives
As communities across Maine continue to feel the impacts of the opioid crisis, local nonprofits are taking action to equip residents with the tools and knowledge needed to respond effectively during an overdose emergency. On Thursday, Feb. 5, from 6 to 7 p.m., the Lincoln County Recovery Community Center (LCRCC) will host a free, hands-on Narcan (Naloxone HCl) Training at 3 Hall St., Newcastle.
The training will be led by Will Matteson, Substance Use Prevention Specialist for Healthy Lincoln County (HLC), who will guide participants through:
-
Recognizing the signs of an opioid overdose
-
Understanding how Narcan (naloxone) works
-
Safely and correctly administering Narcan nasal spray
-
Knowing what to do after Narcan is given
Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. As Maine and the country have continued to face too many opioid overdose deaths, community training has become one of the most effective ways to ensure bystanders are prepared to act. According to public health leaders, every minute counts—and the presence of a trained individual can mean the difference between life and death.
“Everyone has the power to save a life,” says Matteson. “By learning how to respond confidently in an overdose situation, community members become part of the safety net that keeps our friends, neighbors, and loved ones alive until medical help arrives.”
This training is made possible by Lincoln County’s Opioid Settlement Funds Grants. HLC received an LCOSF Grant in July of 2025 to sustain and grow harm reduction efforts in the area. Naloxone training is just one part of this program, but it remains a key element of our work to raise awareness and empower neighbors to see themselves as part of the solution.
The event is free, open to the public, and suitable for individuals of all backgrounds—no prior medical knowledge is required. Participants will learn practical, accessible skills and walk away more prepared to support those experiencing an opioid overdose.
This training is offered in partnership with the Lincoln County Recovery Community Center and Healthy Lincoln County, organizations committed to building safer, healthier communities through education, support, and compassionate action.
Registration is not required, but we do want a rough headcount, so if interested please email Will at wmatteson@healthylincolncounty.org to let us know you are planning to attend.
