Newcastle weighs in on Route 1 corridor plan
There are five towns, 20 miles and a lot of activity along the Route 1 corridor from Wiscasset to Waldoboro, Lincoln County Planner Bob Faunce said.
“There's a lot of focus because Route 1 is a corridor for business,” he said Monday at the Newcastle Board of Selectmen meeting.
Faunce was there to discuss the Route 1 corridor plan, which involves Wiscasset, Edgecomb, Newcastle, Damariscotta and Waldoboro.
The board didn't take action on the corridor plan, but vowed to bring up some of the more salient points in the future.
Faunce said he will soon be bringing his findings to the other towns along the corridor.
“We looked at chances for economic development and all the different ordinances up and down the corridor,” he said. “What we don't want to see happen is have one area get 'stripped-out.'”
Faunce said when an area is stripped-out, like Wiscasset was several years ago, it builds developments without long-term planning.
Faunce said the addition of turning lanes along Route 1 was something he would suggest to help aide the flow of traffic, but more study by the Department of Transportation would be needed to determine where it would help most.
Faunce also brought up what Selectman Ben Frey called the “R-Word.”
“When round-a-bouts were first brought up 10 years ago, there were only three in the state,” Faunce said. “The DOT was hammered (when the idea was brought up in other communities) because it thought it had local support.”
Selectman Christopher Doherty said the intersection of Academy Hill Street and Business Route 1 should be evaluated further to determine what course of action should be followed to make the intersection better.
