News … paper?
The news really poured in for this week’s issue and our coverage of Windjammer Days added to the daily flow. But Houston (and Boothbay, etc.), we have a problem.
Despite being a broadsheet with larger pages than most newspapers around the state, we are still dependent upon advertising to support the number of pages we publish each week, as are other newspapers.
A friend of mine reminded me last week that his former daily newspaper, the Kennebec Journal, is now only publishing once a week. Sad news.
Days of yore, people looked forward to sitting down and flipping through the printed pages, reading the latest news, the results of their sports team’s latest games, finding out who died, and more. Nowadays, much of the news is disseminated via news organizations’ websites. It’s the same with our websites. We can publish a lot more news, more photos and breaking news that our weekly printed product can’t do.
We are constantly getting “Thanks for all you do” and “This newspaper is important” messages verbally and via email. The messages add to our work ethic; however, supporting the newspaper by subscribing, advertising and buying the printed product is most important to keep it going past our 149 years. Yes, we have been around that long and we want to be here for a lot longer.
Thank you to all who support our newspaper and keep the positive messages coming. We know the future of printed newspapers but even our online presence needs support. We’re here for you and we hope all will be here for us in the years to come.
