Nick Morton scores biggest career win at Wiscasset Speedway

Over 2,000 fans packed the Wiscasset Speedway grounds on Saturday evening, July 26 for one of the biggest races of the summer: the $1,500-to-win Ward and Sons Builders Super Street 100.
The action-packed racing program included all Group 1 divisions, with the competition kicking off with a 25-lap makeup race for the Kennebec Equipment Rental Thunder 4 Minis. Former division champion Shane Webber pulled ahead with the early lead as drivers stacked up 3-wide for second behind him. Kyle Willette won the battle and pulled to Shane Webber’s door on lap 4, challenging for the top spot. The drivers remained door-to-door until halfway, where Webber faded back to third behind Zach Audet. Kyle Willette was able to hold his car owner Zach Audet off, picking up his second straight win in the division.
Nick Morton won his qualifying heat race for the Super Street 100, resulting in an extra $100 payout. He powered to the early lead in the feature and distanced himself from the competition, pulling out to a full straightaway lead by lap 30. He squared up with Brett Osmond following a lap 33 restart but maintained his position at the top of the leaderboard. The field spread out from there and the leaders began navigating lap traffic on lap 65.
Noah Haggett came to life on a lap 67 restart but was unable to capitalize, falling outside of the top 3. While Nick Morton continued to pull away in the closing laps of the race, there was a battle shaping up for the runner-up spot between Brett Osmond and Dan McKeage, Jr. McKeage made his move with five laps to go and completed the pass just two laps later. He was unable to catch Nick Morton, who secured the victory - the biggest of his career to date. Nick was ecstatic hopping out of his car in Victory Lane and was met with both a roaring crowd and an excited group of friends, family and crew.
The Brackett’s Market 4-Cylinder Pros followed the Super Streets with their own 25-lap feature. Unfortunately, the beginning of the race was chaotic as a big pile-up collected many heavy hitters including Chassidy Shorty, Max Parlin and others. Jacobee Thacker got a big jump on the restart and maintained command through multiple cautions that followed. Just as the checkered flag was in sight, Jaxson Moreside entered the picture, challenging Thacker for the top spot with 3 laps to go. Moreside cleared him on the final lap of the race, securing the feature victory. Max Parlin followed, completing the podium.
John Ricci took off with the early lead in the 30-lap feature for the Davis Erector Group 207 Crate Modifieds. Ryan Phillips was also on the move at halfway, all over newcomer Ryan Neal’s back bumper for the runner-up spot. Bubba Pelton also joined the battle late, nipping on their heels with 10 laps to go. Ryan Phillips finally completed the pass on lap 23 as Bubba Pelton followed, dropping Ryan Neal outside of the top 3. John Ricci was untouchable at the front of the field, picking up his third feature victory of the season in the division.
Kelly Moore pulled out to a commanding early lead over Will Collins in the 40-lap feature for the Norm’s Used Cars Pro Stocks. Will Collins began to lose steam at halfway, descending through the field as Daniel Harding took over the runner-up spot. Harding began to bite into Kelly Moore’s deficit, swiftly taking over the top spot with just about 10 laps to go. He sailed off into the sunset, scoring his first career Pro Stock victory at 15 years old over 2 seasoned veterans in Kelly Moore and Charlie Colby.
The Thunder 4 Minis closed out the night with another 25-lap feature race. There was a 3-way battle for the lead early, with Derek Cook breaking free from the competition. Meanwhile, multi-time champion Zach Audet was on the move, claiming the runner-up spot on lap 9. Audet got a big jump following a lap 13 restart, taking over the top spot as Kyle Willette followed in succession. Audet got the upper hand over Willette in their second go-around of the day, picking up the victory. Derek Cook followed, completing the top 3.
