No new gym floor needed, so far, following sprinkler incident
The Wiscasset Community Center gym floor will get resurfaced, likely next April, but so far it appears replacement will not be necessary, Wiscasset Parks and Recreation facility and programs manager Bob Macdonald said.
The determination follows a Dec. 13 incident that started with an airborne basketball and ended with cleanup of hundreds of gallons of water from the sprinkler system. Wiscasset Parks and Recreation officials have said the ball sheared a sprinkler head off, setting off the deluge that closed the center for the next day.
A one-week closure of the gym, but not the entire center, will probably be scheduled for April to avoid disrupting winter programs, Macdonald said Dec. 29. Insurance plus a deductible will cover the resurfacing, he said. He didn’t immediately know the costs of the work, but replacement would have been about a $100,000 job that would have also been largely borne by insurance, he said.
Macdonald said if a problem develops, “We would reassess at that time, but right now it looks like it’s going to be okay.”
There is still a possibility of replacing the maple floor if mold or other problems occur, Macdonald said. In the coming months, air quality will be monitored, he said. Gym use continues as normal; and he and Souza are looking into the latest technology in sprinkler head cages. Cages weren’t installed along with the system years ago, but the ones being manufactured now appear to be more durable so they may be added, Macdonald said.
Macdonald said the quick response by all involved, including center staff, the Wiscasset Fire Department and ServPro in Brunswick, helped get water off the floor and out the door. “People were grabbing snow shovels, squeegees, brooms, anything they could find. Everyone jumped to it.” Wet-vacuums were also used, he said.
Town Manager Marian Anderson said Dec. 29, she was awaiting a report from the insurance adjuster. The center is insured through the Maine Municipal Association, she said.
