May you have one of the best birthdays, filled with good wishes from all who love you.
Little note from Doreen Conboy, who takes care of Alna archives. Our historical records have entered the digital age. We thank David Abbott for his donation of a used computer, our very first for use in the vault. Gerry Flanagan who helps Doreen, has installed software, now setting up program so we can digitize our inventory. A scanner was purchased to handle the photographic collection. Roger Whitney did video interviews in 1992 and 1993 with our elderly citizens giving informal talks about Alna history.
Sadly most of the speakers have passed on, so these DVDs are a valuable record. Marlene Groves of Pitou Press in Rockland, compiled early vitals records, researched state archives and then donated a copy of the book to vault. We greatly accept donations from folks for the vault, anything to do with Alna history such as books, diaries, letters, essays and pictures, etc. For more information call Doreen at 207-586-5051.
The Alna Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD) needs your help. Landlines have gone to cell phones, so donation list is useless. Cindy and David Seigars of Cross Road, do the calls for the suppers. If you still want to help support the department call Cindy at 207-882-7162 or fires station 207-586-5555 leave message if no answer, with name and number. Your number will not be shared. They need pies and salads for the April 13 Ham & Baked Bean Supper.
The AVFD is well known for their homemade pies for dessert and Pie Action. This is because of Alna's good cooks who are so willing to support their fire department. AVFD appreciates your help and thanks you for your donations past, present and future.
The annual "Easter Eggspress" is March 30, train will leave hourly from noon to 3 p.m. The Golden Egg Hunt is for ages 5 and under and 6 and above; normal child's fare will apply. Ride the train to Alna Center station and find the Golden Egg to win a big basket of goodies. If the big egg isn't found the basket will go to the child collecting the most eggs. Each hourly trip will have 2 groups of egg hunters that will be separate. For more information visit www.wwfry.org or call 207-882-4193.
All the incumbents were reelected on Friday and a good turn out for Saturday meeting. Todd Souza from Wiscasset Parks and Recreation Dept. spoke about the new membership levels. They have lowered cost and offer scholarships to off set donation to department. This was passed almost unanimously. Thirteen years ago we tried to have this done and it failed. Personally I am so glad that folks can now afford for families, seniors and children can enjoy and participate in the programs who couldn’t afford it before now. Thank you town folks for helping out in this area.
Chris Cooper did great job as usual as moderator, keeping things running smoothly. Amy, Cindy and ladies brought in snacks, fruit salad, cookies, breads and cinnamon rolls to go with coffee, which is always on tap. Folks stood around talking and munching out after the adjournment.
Our new Animal Control officer Jack Cheney really got broke in good. First call, to remove skunk from a drainpipe. He says, "I’m getting a hazard suit next time." Can you imagine the smell he has to live with for a while?
Amy was asked to serve on nominating committee for Lincoln-Sagadahoc Counties Municipal Clerks Association last Thursday.
On March 24 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Gary Hayward will lead a Full Moon Hike at Hidden Valley Nature Center. This is fourth full moon hike they have experienced this winter. For more information visit www.hvnc.org or call 207-200-8840.
Hope you have good week. Spring has sprung so get out there, visit your neighbors, even if it’s only a dooryard visit.
