Phyllis V. Eaton Hart
Phyllis Viola Eaton Hart, 98, died Monday, October 7, 2013 at Thornton Oaks Retirement Community in Brunswick.
She was born in Phippsburg on August 3, 1915 daughter of Leon Eaton and Alice Wyman. She graduated from Morse High School, Bath in 1933 and later at Nasson College.
She was employed by Firemen's Fund Insurance Co., the state of Maine as secretary to chairman of the Accident Commission and the Becker Company, East Orange, N.J.
She was married in 1939 to Wallace K. Hart who died in 2003 after 64 years of marriage. They lived in Augusta, Rangeley, Dixfield, Lewiston, and moved to New Jersey and resided in Irvington and Florham Park.
At retirement she and her husband returned to Maine and lived in Edgecomb and Wiscasset. In Wiscasset she was active in the First Congregational Church and treasurer of the Senior Center. She volunteered at Miles Hospital in Damariscotta for 17 years as a switchboard operator.
Phyllis loved to bake and always had the cookie jar filled for her husband, family and visitors. She was known for her great cooking skills and entertaining neighbors and friends. Evenings were spent knitting sweaters which were donated to the church Summer Fest. Family was her priority and she was always interested in the lives of those she loved. Spending time at the Small Point cottage was also special with the lobster picnics and friends. Doing kind things for others was her specialty.
During her last nine years at Thornton Oaks, she developed many treasured friends.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol Matlock (David) of Yorkville, Ill.; a son, Brad Hart (Suzanne) of Phippsburg; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alice Clark of Bath.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 12 at Thornton Oaks, 25 Thornton Way, Brunswick. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church, UCC, P.O. Box 350, Wiscasset, ME 04578.
