Preservation panel eyes changes
Wiscasset’s Historic Preservation Commission held a meeting on Jan. 5 to hear several certificate of appropriateness applications, and had planned to work on changes to the preservation ordinance.
Only one of the applying property owners had sent in documentation to discuss, and the commission quickly approved the application for 35 Fort Hill Road, which involved a new fence.
The commission tabled its adoption of rules of procedure and codes of conduct, as well as its ordinance review, until Monday, Jan. 9, at noon.
During the two-hour session, the group agreed to add a statement to each agenda informing members of the public that they must adhere to the same rules of propriety, decorum and good conduct that were adopted by the Select Board, and that anyone who violates the rules can be asked to leave the meeting. If they refuse to leave, a police officer can be summoned to assist. Commission members proposed new language for the ordinance to call for all attendees to follow the rules.
They also agreed to propose language for both the ordinance and the application form that named the authorized agent of the applicant, and agreed to propose that if the applicant was not the owner, the owner would have to submit a letter approving the applicant’s request.
These items will be reviewed by the Ordinance Review Committee on Jan. 23.
The commission will meet Jan. 24 at 5 p.m. to address some of the other issues members wanted to discuss regarding the ordinance.
