Protest of ICE, vigil held Jan. 10
On Saturday, Jan. 10, over 320 Lincoln County residents lined both sides of the Newcastle/Damariscotta bridge from one end to the other to protest the ICE killing of Renee Good in Minneapolis. In the evening, 150 attended a candlelight vigil in Damariscotta.
The killing of Renee Good crystalized for many rally and vigil participants the belief that ICE is operating as a paramilitary force under the direct control of the Presidency and outside of normal legal restraints, with little or no accountability. Those at the rally and vigil were both expressing their profound sympathy with Renee Good’s family, their understanding that it could have been any one of us participating in these anti-ICE rallies, and their anger at the open contempt of the Trump administration for constitutional rights that have been an essential thread in the fabric of American democracy since the Declaration of Independence.
