Robert C. Duncan
Robert Cameron Duncan, beloved husband of the Rev. Lucinda Duncan, died Monday afternoon, October 21 at his home in West Concord, Mass., with Lucinda at his side. He was 71.
After beginning his career as a teacher in Lincoln (Mass.) public schools, Bob was hired by the Fenn School in Concord, and served as teacher, coach, head of the Lower School, and assistant headmaster for 29 years until his retirement.
He was born at Emerson Hospital in Concord, graduated from Lawrence University in Wisconsin, and from Tufts University with a Masters in Education. Along with Lucinda, he served as a Peace Corps volunteer, building one room schools in rural Honduras.
He is survived by his wife, Lucinda; his twin brother, William Duncan and wife Lizbeth of Burke, Va.; brother, John Duncan and wife Carol of Charlotte, N.C.; sons, Roger Duncan and wife Martina of Bath, Ritch Duncan and wife Rachel of New York, N.Y. and Alec Duncan of Denver, Colo. He has two grandchildren, Julianna Duncan of Bath and Annabelle Duncan of New York, N.Y.
In addition to his passionate dedication to the education and development of Fenn's boys, Bob was a lifelong sailor, and relished his summers spent on sailboats on the coast of Maine, pleasure sailing, racing and fishing with his family and his parents, Roger and Mary Duncan. Another of his great joys was serving as the Fenn School "band aide" and marching alongside the Fenn School Marching Band in Concord's annual Patriots Day Parade.
Bob wrote the last edition of “The Cruising Guide to the New England Coast,” following several decades of authorship by his father and grandfather. Bob earned his captain’s license and for many years assisted his father and later his son, Alec, in taking passengers for hire aboard their 32-foot Friendship sloop, Eastward, in Boothbay Harbor.
Bob's memorial service was held last Sunday at the Fenn School Meeting House in Concord, and can be viewed online at new.livestream.com/fennschool/duncan.
In lieu of flowers, Bob requested that gifts in his name may be made to The Fenn School Band to support the band's many needs. Donations may be mailed to The Fenn School at 516 Monument Street, Concord, MA 01742 and www.fenn.org/giving.
