Scarecrows start Wiscasset’s Scarecrowfest

Northbound traffic was at times slow near Wiscasset’s common on Saturday ahead of Damariscotta Pumpkinfest’s parade. But at least along the way motorists could glimpse another form of fall fun: Businesses’ and groups’ scarecrows mounted as part of Scarecrowfest week.

Among the creations were a bee, a boat captain, a gardener, and a pair of skeletons with flashing eyes, a raven and some fashion sense.

Wiscasset Area Chamber of Commerce’s Pat Cloutier and husband Russell stood by to help entrants in the contest to be judged Scarecrowfest week. Several scarecrows were lined up facing Route 1 and Pat Cloutier anticipated two more arrivals. She noted entrants were being numbered, but not named, for judging.

Scarecrows in WACC’s contest used to go at numerous sites on and near Route 1. The contest moved to the common this year. So have some other parts of the expanded Scarecrowfest.

    Events continue through Oct. 19.
