Scotties conquer Boothbay Harbor: Myette hosts advocacy fundraiser

Tom Myette and his Scottie Rita hosted The Scottish Terrier Club of New England’s (STCNE) Wine & Wags Cocktail Party to benefit senior Scotties and promote the organization’s rescue, adoption and welfare programs, at his home in the harbor, Saturday, Sept. 20, to an invited list of about 30 advocates. Guests shared their adoption stories. Attending dogs received Superstar Rescue Ribbons.
The immediate past president, Barbara Ljunggren, honored several members for their service this past year. From saving dogs that were dropped at high-kill shelters, to rehousing after an owner dies, to someone picking up his 500th dog for transport (including one he had to take to urgent care), members were recognized for their contributions to the beloved breed. A favorite story includes a Scottie that would go to work with her dad (an environmentalist) every day; he died, leaving the dog lonely and constantly barking. Since being rehoused, the Scottie only barks (comically) at the New England Patriots helicopter when it flies over her home.
“We're all Scotting people. Each Scottie will tell us a different story, and families in need of help know they can call us because we don't judge. We just come,” said Ljunggren.
The club emphasizes responsible ownership, good sportsmanship in competitions, and providing a loving environment for Scottish Terriers. They also offer hospice for rescued dogs, accepting dogs who are older or have serious illnesses requiring substantial resources, and working to provide the best match between a rescue dog and their adopters.
STCNE was founded in 1939 and also provides education and advocacy among members and the public. Members are encouraged to participate in various activities, outdoor events, informational meetings and club gatherings. This work is supported by fundraisers and donations, as the club is a tax-deductible 501(c)3 non-profit organization. On Saturday, raffles, a silent auction and merchandise sales helped raise funds to support their mission.
The club offers an emergency number (203) 208-1912 for immediate pickup if a dog needs to be surrendered to the rescue program, and adoption placements are always private.
Ports of Italy catered the event.
