Sea and Science Center holds first sailing classes
During the week of July 15, the Boothbay Sea and Science Center’s community sailing program rolled out its first full week of sailing while enjoying some of Maine’s best summer weather.
Based out of Wotton’s Wharf, BSSC’s first ever Pre-teen/Teen Keelboat class not only learned the ropes aboard the Program’s 23-foot Sonar sailboat but also the lost art of rowing.
Nathan Graves, Jay Hasch, Jonathan Rollins, Duncan Saal, Adam Sirois and Waylon Armstrong grew as a team and as individuals as they rowed various dinghies around beautiful Mill Cove.
They learned useful knots and rigged, maneuvered and sailed the Center’s Sonar in Boothbay Harbor.
These sailors experienced firsthand trimming the jib and mainsail, manning the helm and skills related to communication and safety on and off the water.
BSSC’s program is currently offering weekday instruction in sailing and seamanship for students age 5 to 55-plus in rowboats, Turnabout sailing dinghies and aboard the Sonar.
Boats are also available for private instruction on weekends depending on availability.
