Seguin Island’s lighthouse keepers share story
Join Appalachian Mountain Club members, Mary Hillary and her husband Greg Guckenburg, as they present a slide show and tell their story of being volunteer lighthouse keepers on Seguin Island.
This event will be held at the Curtis Memorial Library, 23 Pleasant Street, Brunswick, on Thursday, April 17. Optional potluck at 6 p.m., followed by the presentation at 7 p.m.
They decided to become lighthouse keepers because they love the ocean so much, always vacation on islands, and had looked out at Seguin from Reid and Popham since their children were very young. Upon retirement, they had the idea to apply as keepers. They started out ocean lovers and ended up lighthouse lovers.
During their presentation they will share their unique experiences as the 2013 Volunteer Lighthouse Keepers on Seguin Island off the coast of Maine. They will talk about the history of the lighthouse and will share many interesting details about the lighthouse, such as the preservation of the buildings and lens.
They will further discuss the varied flora and fauna of the island and the hiking trails found on the 64 acres of Seguin. They will present a slideshow of 200-plus pictures to play silently while Greg and Mary talk about their experiences at the Seguin Lighthouse. They will share the thrills and hard work of being volunteer lighthouse keepers and let us know just what it takes to become a lighthouse keeper. They will also leave time for questions and answers from the audience.
The talk is free and open to the public. Visit www.amcmaine.org for more information; or email Fran Leyman at education@amc.maine.org.
