Selectmen vote 3-2 against pulling support for CMP project
Woolwich selectmen voted 3-2 Tuesday night against rescinding an earlier decision in support of Central Maine Power’s proposed corridor project. They had promised to reconsider their decision after hearing from corridor opponents last month.
Selectmen Jason Shaw, Allen Greene and Chairman David King Sr. voted against Allison Hepler’s motion to rescind support. Selectman Dale Chadbourne voted in support of Hepler’s motion.
“My position hasn’t changed,” King said. He later added: “If corridor opponents are successful in gathering enough petition signatures, the issue could be decided in a town-wide vote.”
“The transmission corridor is already here, there’s no impact to the town of Woolwich except that it will add additional monies to our tax base,” said Shaw.
Greene said the Canadian hydropower the project would carry to Massachusetts would reduce carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels along with harmful greenhouse gases. “I’m a proponent of having more clean energy,” he said.
After making her motion, Hepler noted the board’s letter addressed the entire project not just the mile-long portion passing through Woolwich. She said she’d changed her mind after hearing the many arguments against it.
Chadbourne said the people he’s heard from in town don’t want it.
After each selectman had a chance to speak, King called for a vote declining to take public comment. The board had heard from residents at its previous meeting, he said. This brought an outburst from one woman who said she’d come to the meeting to share her concerns about the project.
“We’ve done our homework,” said King, moving on to the next agenda item.
In November 2017, the board forwarded a letter in support of CMP’s bid to deliver hydropower and wind-generated energy from Quebec, Canada to Massachusetts with the New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) project.
The project which has yet to win state-wide approval includes upgrading a transmission grid from Coopers Mills to a substation on the Maine Yankee property in Wiscasset. About a mile of it passes through Woolwich near Old Stage and Mountain roads.
