Sen. Johnson receives perfect score on education record
Sen. Chris Johnson (D-Somerville) has received a 100 percent rating from the Maine Education Association for his support of education issues during the 126th Legislature.
“Providing a good education to our next generation is the most important thing Maine people do for each other,” said Johnson. “We need to take a strong stand for education and support the teachers and teaching profession that make it happen.”
Johnson is one of 14 Democratic senators to receive a perfect score from the Maine Education Association.
The Maine Education Association represents 25,000 educators in Maine and is dedicated to supporting policies and laws to improve public education.
During the 2013 legislative session, Johnson supported the Legislature’s two-year budget, which provided an additional $30 million in funding for public schools and provides a path for the state to fulfill its commitment to fund education at the 55 percent level.
Johnson also supported bills to increase suicide awareness and prevention in schools, improve the rules for restraint and seclusion, and increase school funding by phasing out a provision that allowed some districts to reduce funding to their schools.
Johnson opposed a bill to allow guns in schools, and the governor’s proposal for the state to take over failing schools, create a voucher system, and lift the cap on the number of charter schools.
The Legislature will reconvene in January 2014.
