Shakespeare, ice cream mix in Wiscasset
Terri Wells was both volunteer and shopper on the lawn near the Used Book Room at Wiscasset Public Library Saturday afternoon. As a member of Friends of Wiscasset Public Library, she was helping with the group’s book sale.
She was also looking for a good read for a long plane ride. She’s going to Greece.
Rudy Seifert of Warren had Shakespeare in his bag of buys. He and wife Sally had visited the shop before. At the sale, spending $2 on a hard cover earned an ice cream treat. He chose the ice cream sandwich; she, the Drumstick, which led in popularity about an hour into the event, according to Friends member Jennifer Spaur.
Members said people started showing up an hour and a half before the noontime start. President Linda Winterberg had been concerned the mild, sunny weather would have people doing other things. But she’d been hopeful it would bring foot traffic and it did, she said. “It’s wonderful–a beautiful day to be walking around town.”
Marc Swartz’ picks were focused on the sea. The Wiscasset man, owner of a 20-foot Grady White power boat, got the 56th edition of “Chapman Piloting: Seamanship & Small Boat Handling” and James M. Acheson’s “The Lobster Gangs of Maine.”
Roey Reinin brought her Little Sister Karissa MacKenzie, 9. ”She loves to read,” Reinin said as MacKenzie — with an armful of classics of children’s literature, from “Swiss Family Robinson” to “Make Way for Ducklings” and “Alice in Wonderland” – continued looking. “I have the movie,” she told Friends Vice President Katharine Martin-Savage about “Wonderland.”
Through the Used Book Room and other efforts, Friends raises money for library activities, including the children’s summer reading program. The Used Book Room’s renovation is nearly done. The final piece, new lighting fixtures, should come after the September “Bands for Books” fundraiser, Winterberg said. The group had tables full of books on the lawn for the sale and had the shop open.
“It’s a wonderful place to spend some time. It’s cool in the summer, it’s warm in the winter, and we have a wonderful selection and really good prices,” Winterberg said when asked what she would like people to know about the shop. Friends members are staffing the shop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Winterberg said. Any other time the library is open, the shop’s patrons can pay upstairs at the library desk, she said. The library is at 21 High Street.
