Shaw: This mud season one of worst

Woolwich Road Commissioner Jack Shaw called this year’s mud season one for the record books. “It’s by far among the worst I’ve ever seen,” Shaw told the select board Monday evening.

Shaw is in his 36th year as road commissioner. He said all of the town’s gravel roads were passable and remained open but need almost daily attention.

“Chops Point Road is one of the worst because a good deal of it is shaded. Other than run the grader over it, there’s little else we can do until things start to warm up and dry out.”

Many of the snowbanks on the roadsides have turned to ice, Shaw continued. “It warms up during the day, they melt and the water runs into the road adding to the problem.”

Shaw said if residents have concerns about their road they should call the town office.

Selectman Allen Greene said he’d like to hear more about what the Special Events Committee has planned for this year’s Woolwich Day celebration. "It’s been a standing tradition here for a long time. I’m a big proponent and would like to see it continue,” he said.

Turnout for the August event has been on the wane the last few years. Last year, organizers cancelled the annual road race due to declining interest and held a canoe-kayak race across Nequasset Lake. One suggestion has been to return live music or other entertainment to the event. Green and Selectman Jason Shaw will attend this week’s committee meeting.

Selectmen renewed a liquor license for Montsweag Farm Restaurant; the vote was 4-0-1 with Selectman Dale Chadbourne abstaining. Chadbourne said he had a conflict of interest.

The board reappointed Bruce Engert code enforcement officer and plumbing inspector and named Tom Davis to the Communications Committee.

The board directed Engert to re-inspect the site of a structure fire on Hall Road six months ago. Two residents of the neighborhood feared melting snow was carrying debris from the site to nearby wetland. They also suggested a fence be erected around the site to keep children away from it.

“If (Engert) thinks the fire site needs to be fenced for safety and mulched for runoff he’ll let us know and it will be taken care of,” Selectman Jason Shaw said.

Chairman David King Sr. added the property owner has promised to resume cleanup of the site this spring.
